_The Shakespeare Head_, January, 1890), and his _A New Chronology of the English Drama and Theatre_ (1891). These were followed by more solid work in the volumes of _Tudor and Jacobean Stage_ (1893-5) and _Old Players and New Plays_ (1894), which are still valuable, especially for the theatre history of the reign of Elizabeth. The period was further illuminated by W. A. Wright, who published his _Elizabethan Drama in its Relation to Social History_ (1896) and _Drama before Shakespeare_ (1898), and by G. E. Bentley, whose _English Dramatic Authors 1450-1700_ (1902) contains a useful general bibliography. A more specialized contribution is that of F. S. Boas, who has given us _Ancient English Stages_ (1896), and numerous articles on the drama in the _Cambridge History of English Literature_, in the _Dictionary of National Biography_, and elsewhere. J. M. Osborn has added much to our knowledge of the life of Shakespeare in Stratford, and of his connexion with the theatre, by his _Shakespeare's Life in London_ (1902). The most recent addition to the list is W. W. Greg, whose _The Repertory of Shakespeare's Theatre 1594-1613_ (1908) has given us a far clearer view of the chronological distribution of the plays than had hitherto been possible.]
