South African gospel group Wacha Mkhukhu Wachumlilo has won the Best Gospel Group award at the Thobela FM Sepedi Music Awards held at Meropa Casino on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the group’s two-decade career.
Founded in 2005 by the late Charles Nkosana Kodi and Lucas Mojeremane Xale, the group has built a strong following over the years, despite not previously securing a major industry award.
The latest recognition comes on the back of their album Re Kgoeletsa Magodimong, which has been widely praised as one of their most accomplished projects to date. The album features emerging talent Kago Molefe as a lead vocalist, alongside contributions from Paul K, Keke, Musa Mhlawuli, Simon Makgatholela and Given Moganedi.
Speaking after the awards ceremony, the group’s manager and son of the late Nkosana, Neo Kodi, described the achievement as a long-awaited breakthrough.
“I feel like the generation of my dad, in whose steps we walk today, was overlooked and undermined for the longest time. And it is such a fulfilling moment for us to receive this recognition, and we feel it’s theirs as much as it is for us,” says Kodi.
“This is even more fulfilling after the SAMAs snubbed us unreasonably three times, including snubbing one of the biggest songs titled: Modimo Wa Bo Engenas. We really thank Thobela FM for this recognition,” he adds.
The ledendary ZCC group had previously received three nominations at the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) but did not secure a win, making the Thobela FM recognition particularly meaningful.
In a statement shared on social media, the group expressed gratitude to their supporters, often referred to as the “Mlilo Nation.”
“We’d like to thank each and everyone that voted for us and ensured that we win this award. You’re all so special to us. We love you,” the statement read.
They also paid tribute to their founders for establishing what they described as a “beautiful group” that continues to impact audiences.
Wacha Mkhukhu Wachumlilo has invited supporters to celebrate the achievement at the upcoming Wachumlilo Day of Prayer, scheduled to take place on 6 June 2026 at the State Theatre in Pretoria.
The award is expected to further cement the group’s place in South Africa’s gospel music landscape, following years of consistent output and a loyal fan base.
