The expansion of the world’s transit systems continues at a rapid pace. In 2025, more than 1,000 kilometers of new urban rail lines—metros, light rail, and tramway systems—opened for service, and the same will be true in 2026. Regional rail, bus rapid transit, and aerial tram lines are also planned for opening.
In this annual post, I review all of the urban transit projects around the globe that are planned for 2026—and list those that were completed in 2025. There are many, many, many projects, so I’ve divided them into sections, based on country. You can jump down to the list of projects opening in 2026—or the list of projects that opened in 2025.
In a post published earlier this month, I detailed transit expansion in North America; this post reviews the world overall. Data for this compilation can be viewed freely on Transit Explorer, which now highlights projects opening this year on the map, or purchased for use in Shapefile, GeoJSON, and CSV formats.
Previous compilations of new and planned transit projects on The Transport Politic can be found here: 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | 2013 | 2014 | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 (United States) / 2025 (Global)
Trends: Where is Transit Expansion Heading Around the World?
As has been the case for the last decade, Chinese cities dominated urban rail transit openings in 2025 (full list below). They accounted for 72 percent of all new metro or light rail route kilometers that opened globally—930 kilometers in China of 1,300 kilometers worldwide. Most of China’s transit expansion was in the form of new metro lines, distributed across 23 urban regions. The Pearl River Delta—the enormous complex of cities encompassing Dongguan, Foshan, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen—alone accounted for 179 kilometers of new lines in 2025. That’s longer than the entire Chicago ‘L’ system.
Similar circumstances are expected in 2026 (full list below), when Chinese cities are currently planned to add more than 1,100 new line kilometers, almost all in the form of metro lines.
Indian cities—led by Chennai, Delhi, and Mumbai—are also building out their metro systems. So are Egyptian and Turkish metropolitan areas.
Light rail or tramway systems are being built less quickly, though there are a few standouts planned for 2026: Bologna, which is creating a new tram network; Padova, which is extending its tire-running tram system; and Brest, Lyon, and Marseille, France, each of which are adding new lines to existing systems.
The net impact of all of the expansion of metro systems in Chinese cities over the past two decades has been the creation of by far the world’s largest network of metro lines. China now has 12,500 kilometers of operating metro lines. That’s five times as much as the entire European Union (EU)—and nine times as much as the United States.
Based on current plans, India will pass the United States in terms of the length of its metro systems by the end of 2026.
As China’s and India’s cities have built up their metro lines, so have EU cities, though at a slower rate; at the same time, however, Japan and the United States have barely expanded their systems—even though they were the world leaders until the 1970s.
Where are the largest regional metro networks in the world today? It depends on the accounting—should the Pearl River Delta and the Kansai metropolitan areas each count as one region? Do the regional rail lines that through-run onto metros in Japanese and Korean cities count as metro lines?
Assuming you answer each of these questions in the affirmative, of the 20 largest metro systems in the world, two are in Japan (Tokyo and Kansai), one each is in India (Delhi), Russia (Moscow), South Korea (Seoul), the United Kingdom (London), and the United States (New York), and 13 are in China.
Including lines that are currently under construction, the top 20 list is the same—with the exception of Paris, expected to have the 19th largest metro system by the time its current lines are completed in 2032 or so; that will place it just ahead of New York City in total length.
Today’s list of the largest metro systems is incomparable to that of 35 years ago, when not a single Chinese city made the top 20 list (Hong Kong was at the time a British protectorate)—but four US cities and ten European ones did.
These trends point to a continued explosion in the construction of urban rail lines around the world, with a focus in China and India. Read through the full list of projects below, and navigate the current and planned systems around the world on Transit Explorer.

You do yourself a disservice by playing along with this “Arterial Rapid Transit” nonsense. US BRT is bad enough; but ART is a complete joke.
Slight correction, Hong Kong was no longer a British Protectorate 25 years ago. It was handed back to China in 1997, so in 25 years China has gone from 1 to 13 cities in the top 20.
You’re missing the Melbourne Metro Tunnel, which is beginning full service on 1 Feb after trial services began in November. It’s a 9km metro/commuter rail hybrid tunnel a la crossrail with five stations, automated trains within the tunnel.
Nevermind, I see it is in the 2025 openings.
A very interesting and useful list. An amendment: in Auckland NZ, the stations at both ends of the City Rail Link have been renamed, Britomart to Waitematā and Mount Eden to Maungawhau.
I love that map that is linked!
Three of the most important transit improvements now being built in my metro area involve undergrounding and improving existing transit lines, including the construction of a giant new intermodal station. None of that work shows up on the map. It would be nice if major improvements to existing lines were indicated on the map.

Full Take

This compilation of transit projects opening in 2026 reflects a growing global investment in sustainable and efficient public transportation infrastructure. The highlighted projects showcase the commitment of several cities to reduce carbon emissions, alleviate traffic congestion, and enhance connectivity within urban areas.
However, it is essential to acknowledge potential challenges that may arise during the implementation process, such as budget overruns, construction delays, and operational complexities. Moreover, the impact on local communities and displacement of residents due to infrastructure development should also be closely monitored.
Patterns detected: none
Root Cause: The projects' roots lie in urban growth and environmental concerns, driven by global awareness around climate change and the need for sustainable mobility solutions.
Implications: These transit projects will have far-reaching implications on urban development, air quality, and commuters' daily lives. Beneficiaries include residents, businesses, and tourists in targeted cities, while construction companies and suppliers stand to gain financially. Second-order consequences may involve gentrification and increased property values in proximity to newly developed transit stations.
Bridge Questions: What factors contribute to the success or failure of these projects? How can local communities be more effectively engaged during the planning and implementation phases? Are there alternative, more inclusive transportation solutions that could benefit underserved populations in these cities?
