A week has passed since a sudden flash flood, said to have resulted from a glacial avalanche, originated near the Nepal–Tibet border and entered Nepal through the Bhotekoshi River on August 26, 2026, turning a seemingly bright sunny morning into one of the country’s most devastating natural disasters in years. Within minutes, humans and animals, including settlements, roads, bridges, markets, hydropower facilities, and other structures that had taken decades to build, were completely swept away.
The destruction was concentrated along the Bhotekoshi River and Trishuli River corridors, with Rasuwa and Nuwakot emerging as the worst-hit districts. Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan, through which the rivers continue downstream, have also suffered substantial damage. The government has declared Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading disaster crisis zones for three months as government authorities struggle to search and rescue survivors, locate missing people, and deliver emergency support.
The worst-hit areas include Rasuwagadhi, Timure, and Syabrubesi in Rasuwa district, extending toward Bidur in Nuwakot district. Entire settlements have been completely transformed. Mud, silt, and debris buried concrete homes, people, cattle, livelihoods, and businesses, while roads and bridges were cut off, and major hydropower and transmission infrastructure were completely swept away.
This was not a conventional monsoon flood like those seen every rainy season in Nepal.
In a normal flood, river levels rise gradually, giving communities living along riverbanks at least some time to observe and slowly evacuate. In Rasuwa, however, there was reportedly no significant rainfall at the time of the disaster. The ground was not even wet, and the morning had been bright and relatively clear. Then, suddenly, a violent flood, like an ocean storm in a Hollywood movie, swept in from the Himalayan region.
Some experts and observers have described the incident as a “Himalayan Tsunami” because of the flood’s extraordinary speed and force. According to them, the water surged to an estimated 270 feet above normal river levels in some areas, leaving people, animals, homes, and infrastructure with little chance of escape.
“The reality on the ground was far more terrifying than imagined,” said Sujan Sunuwar, a reporter with Indigenous Television who was reporting from the affected areas.
The scale of destruction was visible across the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli corridor. Syabrubesi, Timure, Betrawati, and the surrounding areas suffered extensive damage. Roads were buried or washed away, bridges disappeared, and settlements were left isolated. In some places, the landscape itself appears permanently altered.
Authorities say the flood occurred after the water level of the Bhotekoshi River suddenly increased from the Tibet side. Scientists and environmentalists are investigating whether a massive avalanche blocked the river temporarily before the natural dam burst. If confirmed as a glacial lake outburst flood, the disaster could serve as a warning for the entire mountain range.
Severe Human Cost
The consequences have also been severe for Indigenous communities. Timure and Syabrubesi, about 120 kilometers north of Kathmandu and close to the Nepal–Tibet border, are major gateways to the Langtang region and are predominantly inhabited by the Tamang Indigenous Peoples. It is also an important starting point for the Tamang Heritage Trail and Langtang Valley trek. According to Ram Bahadur Thapa Magar, chairperson of the Indigenous Nationalities Commission, a commission-led field visit found that Indigenous Peoples accounted for 95% of the deaths in Rasuwa and 70 percent in Nuwakot. The preliminary findings were based on the interactions with survivors and stakeholders on the ground.
Besides human loss, 41 motorable bridges and 45 suspension bridges were completely washed away, while nearly 40 kilometers of roads were swept away, and homes, agricultural land, and livelihoods were destroyed. Tamang communities in Rasuwa and Nuwakot, whose ancestral territories extend across the affected corridor, have been disproportionately affected.
For many survivors, the disaster has completely erased a lifetime of earnings, their loved ones, and their means of livelihood. People have lost houses they built over generations and livelihoods that sustained their families. Some have lost parents, children, and other relatives, while thousands remain uncertain about the fate of loved ones who disappeared in the flood.
In several communities, survivors say their future is now uncertain. Some settlements are no longer habitable, pushing communities back by centuries in terms of development and economic security.
Preliminary reports confirm that nearly 1,300 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 4,000 remain missing. More than 500 people are receiving medical treatment, while more than 13,000 people have reportedly been rescued, including about 250 foreign nationals. More than 644 tourists from 33 countries were also reported missing, including security personnel.
On the Tibetan side of the border, over 20 people were reportedly killed and more than 500 were reported missing, with rescue and recovery operations continuing in both countries.
The figures remain subject to verification as bodies continue to be recovered from the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi rivers. For families who have received no information about missing relatives, the uncertainty has become unbearable. Some have begun performing death rituals without recovering bodies. This week, in Kathmandu, dozens of funeral effigies made from Kush (a sacred grass) were cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat in memory of people who disappeared and are presumed dead.
The disaster has also created serious protection concerns. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, persons with disabilities, children, and elderly people were among those who faced difficulties reaching higher ground for safety during flooding and thus were swept away by the flood, and also had difficulty accessing emergency assistance in the aftermath. Agencies working on humanitarian aid warn that disasters of this scale can increase risks of gender-based violence, exploitation, and trafficking, particularly when communications, transport, and protection systems collapse.
Massive Infrastructure Damage
The infrastructure damage is also enormous. The preliminary report shows that more than 8,000 private houses in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha were destroyed, along with 53 government buildings. Government estimates indicate that around 20 million people have been affected in some form.
More than a dozen hydropower projects with a combined capacity of about 900 megawatts along the Trishuli corridor were reportedly destroyed or severely damaged. Workers at some hydropower projects were trapped inside tunnels; the efforts to locate and rescue them continue.
The flood also disrupted electricity and communications. Dhunche, the district headquarters, and much of the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts were plunged into darkness. Access routes to the Kerung Nepal-Tibet border and Kathmandu, the capital city, were completely swept away, leaving parts of the district geographically isolated.
Dipak Lama, a station manager based in the Dhunche district headquarters of Rasuwa, described how even local radio stations struggled to continue communicating with communities when the disaster struck.
“On the very same morning, we had information from the police about the flood, and we were in the middle of sharing information through the radio, but the electricity went off, as the electricity office was destroyed by then,” Lama told Cultural Survival.
Local FM radio is a vital source of information for communities cut off from conventional communication systems. Yet, even radio operations face challenges due to a lack of battery backup and solar power. In remote settlements, residents need information about rescue operations, safe routes, food distribution, and emergency services, but damaged infrastructure makes communication increasingly difficult.
The roads that remain accessible are often buried under silt, mud, and debris. In some places, rice, emergency rations, and tarpaulins have accumulated at distribution centers, but there is no viable route to transport them to isolated villages.
Getting assistance to the people who need it most has therefore become one of the greatest challenges.
Immediate needs in food-hit areas include food, clean drinking water, blankets, tarpaulins, mattresses, hygiene kits, tents, medicines, and clothing. Remote communities are relying heavily on army helicopter flights to deliver essential supplies, while fuel and electricity shortages persist.
The Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force have expanded search-and-rescue operations across the affected districts. Helicopters are being used where destroyed roads and bridges make ground access impossible. Priority in airlifted evacuations is being given to patients, pregnant women, new mothers, children, elderly people, and persons with disabilities.
Generators, portable mobile towers, batteries, medical supplies, tents, and heavy machinery capable of cutting rock and metal are being transported through air and ground corridors.
The Ministry of Health and Population has designated hospitals in Kathmandu to treat the injured, with free treatment arranged at Bir Hospital, the National Trauma Centre, TU Teaching Hospital, Civil Service Hospital, Patan Hospital, and Nepal Police Hospital.
The disaster has also affected the economy. More than 300 vehicles parked at the customs yard in Timure, Rasuwa, were reportedly swept away. The damage came during the peak tourism season, threatening trekking, hospitality, and cross-border trade. Branches of nine commercial banks, eight development banks, and one finance cooperative were also completely swept away.
For communities dependent on agriculture, the consequences could last for years. Government figures indicate that 84,270 people across 17 local municipalities in 6 districts have been directly affected, many of them in Nepal’s hill regions. About 67.4% of people in the affected areas work and depend on agriculture. Crops, livestock, and farmland have been damaged at a particularly difficult time because Nepal’s main monsoon planting season runs from June to September.
The disaster, therefore, threatens not only lives and infrastructure but also food security, household income, and the future of already vulnerable families.
Climate Justice Demands
Indigenous Peoples’ rights activists are calling for disaster response and climate adaptation strategies to incorporate Indigenous knowledge and values. They argue that development projects, including dams and hydropower facilities, which make lands fragile, must not become forms of “destructive development.” They are calling for Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) from affected communities, protection of traditional ecological knowledge, and greater attention to forests, biodiversity, soil conservation, and traditional practices that can reduce vulnerability to landslides and erosion.
The disaster has also intensified debate over climate change and state responsibility.
Environmentalists have classified the Bhotekoshi disaster as climate-induced. Dr. Maheshwar Dhakal, Head of the Climate Change Management Division under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment, said the catastrophic loss of life and property resulted from forces to which Nepal has contributed very little.
“The loss of life and property we suffered in the Bhote Koshi flood is purely a climate-induced disaster,” Dhakal said, arguing that developed and industrialized countries have emitted vast quantities of carbon while Nepal’s contribution remains negligible.
Nepal contributes less than 0.1% of global greenhouse gas emissions but remains highly exposed to the consequences of climate change. Scientists warn that rising temperatures could increase the risks of glacial lake outbursts, avalanches, and sudden glacial floods across the Himalayas, like the recent flood in the Bhotekoshi River.
Experts describe the flooding in Bhotekoshi as potentially one of the region's largest ice-tsunami disasters. There are hundreds of glacial lakes in the high Himalayan range, where natural dams of ice and rock can fail, unleashing enormous quantities of water and causing downstream flooding.
For Nepal, the question is no longer only how to recover from this disaster but also how to prepare for similar disasters in the future.
The government has submitted a claim seeking compensation through the Loss and Damage Fund, a climate finance mechanism established at UNFCCC COP 2022, arguing that Nepal is suffering disproportionate consequences from a climate crisis it did little to cause. Dhakal says Nepal should be viewed not only as a victim but also as a country that contributes to global climate stability through its mountains, forests, biodiversity, and freshwater systems.
“We deserve evaluation and restitution not merely as climate victims, but as active contributors to the global climate balance,” Dhakal said.
The government and the United Nations have agreed to launch a four-month humanitarian flash appeal. Nepal has also declared a state of disaster in 15 affected areas for three months to facilitate financial assistance to victims' families, rescue operations, the relocation of displaced people, and the deployment of security forces.
But for communities along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, the emergency is far from over. A week after the flood, rescuers are still searching for missing people. Families are still waiting for news. Survivors remain in temporary shelters, without electricity, reliable communications, or secure access to their homes.
The debris is slowly being cleared from markets and roads. Excavators and security personnel are working to remove mud and stagnant water and reopen blocked routes. But beneath the debris lies a deeper crisis; communities have lost homes, livelihoods, infrastructure, and, in many cases, entire families.
What happened in Rasuwa and downstream along the Trishuli corridor has exposed the extraordinary vulnerability of Himalayan communities to sudden climate-related disasters. The immediate priority remains clear—save lives, find the missing, provide shelter and food, restore communication, and reconnect isolated communities.
But recovery will require much more than rebuilding roads and bridges. For thousands of survivors, it will mean rebuilding their homes, livelihoods, communities, and sense of pride and security. For Indigenous communities whose ancestral lands have been devastated, recovery must also protect their rights, culture, knowledge, and relationship with the land.
The flood may have lasted only minutes, but its consequences will be felt for generations.
