…to commission the factory in the first quarter of 2027
Cardinal Touch Company Ltd., a Nigerian agro-commodity trader, is expanding into cashew processing with a N4.5 billion investment in a new factory in Shagamu.
The plant, which will have a 10-tonne daily processing capacity, marks the company’s shift from exporting raw commodities to value-added products.
David Olurin, managing director and CEO of Cardinal Touch, at a media parley on Friday, said that the N4.5 billion cashew processing plant will be commissioned in the first quarter of 2027.
“We’re moving from just exporting raw cashews to processing them locally,” he said. “The intention is to process cashews up to semi-processed and ready-to-eat products,” he explained.
Olurin noted that the plant’s location near raw materials, multiple power sources and contracted export sales are part of the company’s strategy to succeed where others have struggled.
He said Cardinal Touch will differentiate itself through product innovation, including mixed nuts and other value-added products.
The company has built relationships with farmer cooperatives and operates its own fleet of trucks to secure raw materials and logistics.
“We have done about 99.9 percent of the work required,” Olurin said, adding that the plant is expected to start operations by February next year.
The company already has ready-to-eat cashews in supermarkets and has exported to the UK and the UAE. Cardinal Touch, established in 2020, plans to list on the Nigerian Stock Exchange as part of its legacy and succession strategy.
The company has launched a N30 billion Commercial Paper Programme and is expanding its product portfolio to include soya oil, cocoa products, and FMCG items.
“The plan is to eventually list the company as part of our legacy and succession plan,” Olurin said.
In his address, Emmanuel Mshelia, chief technical officer, said the organisation is transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector with a focus on value addition.
According to him, the plant will extract Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) from shells, creating another revenue stream.
“What is ordinarily regarded as waste will become another source of foreign exchange earnings,” Mshelia said, adding that CNSL is used in brake linings, automobiles and industrial applications.
He noted that Nigeria currently exports 80 percent of its cashew nuts to India and Vietnam for processing, missing out on value-added opportunities, a narrative he says Cardinal Touch aims to change by processing raw cashews into finished products and increasing value by up to 200 percent.
He added that the company is also developing a 250-tonne-per-day soybean oil extraction plant and a cocoa processing facility.
Mshelia said Cardinal Touch will produce soybean meal, lecithin and acid oil, and process cocoa into liquor, butter and cake.
“The company plans to expand into FMCG products like pasta, spaghetti and beverages, diversifying its portfolio.”
“Cardinal Touch is building sustainable value chain systems, connecting farmers to local and global markets.” “We are transforming Nigeria’s agricultural produce into world-class products,” Mshelia said, adding that production processes will meet international certification standards.
Ndutimobong Sunday, head of business development and commercial, said the business has achieved significant growth in six years through strong corporate governance and risk management.
According to her, the company aims to build a globally sustainable business in export, commodities and agricultural value chains.
“Cardinal Touch has implemented measures to protect investors as it raises public funds, including strict compliance with financial regulations and anti-money laundering requirements.”
“The company vets’ investments internally and has systems to detect and prevent fraud.”
She noted that the company hedges commodity prices to manage market risks and has access to the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) to monitor price movements.
She added that Cardinal Touch is also strengthening sustainable sourcing by working with organisations that comply with local and international regulations, including the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
She explained that the company’s credit rating validates its governance and risk management efforts, assuring investors of its capacity to meet financial obligations, saying it will continue strengthening these measures as it expands and deploys raised funds.
On his part, Bamitale Akindele, executive director for operations and logistics, said the company views itself more as a supply chain organisation than a traditional agro-commodities firm.
Speaking on operations, Akindele noted that while many associate the work with trucks at ports and on highways, the real effort happens behind the scenes with aggregators, warehouse personnel and logistics teams.
He added that people are the company’s greatest asset, crediting an “outstanding team of professionals” for driving Cardinal Touch’s growth over the past six years and saying control measures are already in place following the successful Commercial Paper issuance.
Akindele said Cardinal Touch is building all its plants and factories to meet internationally recognised standards, including BRCGS and ISO certifications.
He explained that the company works closely with Original Equipment Manufacturers throughout construction to ensure compliance at every stage, from plant design and fabrication materials to civil works and installation.
