Keeping Cool During Summer With The Depancel Série-R Chronograph Ice Blue Limited Edition
Depancel has made a name for itself by creating affordable racing-inspired watches. But what if the French brand shook the race livery and created a chronograph inspired by a uniquely elegant road car from the 1940s? You’d end up with the Depancel Série-R Chronograph Ice Blue. It’s a fresh take on Depancel’s popular Série-R Chronograph that maintains the vintage charm and ups the stylish appeal. It shows the versatility of this series, and fans have noticed that as well. As a result, this 100-piece limited edition has already sold out. It’s perfectly understandable why, as the inspiration is one of the most beautiful cars ever created.
If you are familiar with French automotive history, the name Talbot will undoubtedly ring a bell. I was born in 1977, so I mostly know the brand for its cars from the 1980s. At that time, Talbot was part of PSA Peugeot Citroën and produced rather unremarkable cars, like the Solara, the Horizon, and the Sunbeam. It’s safe to say that it wasn’t the brand’s best era in its history, which dates back to the early 20th century. But if you have ever been to a car museum or have read about Talbot’s rich past, you will know that the company produced some of the most beautiful cars ever, especially during the 1930s and ’40s. Many of these now reside in great car collections all over the world.
The story of the Depancel Série -R Chronograph Ice Blue
Talbot was especially known for its extravagant coaches inspired by aeronautics. These cars had lovely flowing lines, enveloping wings, and sculpted volumes. Some prime examples include the Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport and the T150C SS “Teardrop.” In the 1950s, the brand also created some amazing sports cars, like the T14 LS Special Coupé and the 2500 Sport, which could have easily been featured in a James Bond movie.
One of the most stunning Talbot-Lago cars ever was the T26. Just look at the image above, and you will need no further explanation. Bodied by Figoni & Falaschi, this extraordinary creation’s elegantly flowing lines date back to 1947, when the car was first introduced.
Figoni & Falaschi, a French luxury coach builder with Italian roots, was active from 1935 to the 1950s. In that short period, the company designed standout cars for Rolls-Royce, Delahaye, Talbot-Lago, and Simca. According to experts’ accounts, it took Figoni & Falaschi 2,100 hours to complete a full body. Looking at the spectacular Talbot-Lago T26, you can feel the work that went into its creation.
The details of the Depancel Série-R Chronograph Ice Blue Limited Edition
This story inspired Depancel to create a stylish version of its Série-R Chronograph in a colorway taking after the T26. The result is a watch that feels different from the race-inspired Série-R Tangerine Chronograph that I reviewed in 2024. The basics are the same as that model, though. The new Ice Blue Limited Edition has the same 36 × 40mm case with 13.3mm thickness, a 48.5mm lug-to-lug, and a 22mm strap. The elegant exterior, with its grill-inspired curves, features two chronograph pushers and a crown on the right side. On the left, you will find a small plaque with the limited-edition number.
The case is nicely finished with a mix of brushed and polished surfaces and topped with a sapphire crystal. It protects a light blue dial inspired by the Talbot-Lago T26. This dial features vertically engraved grille-like lines on the raised outer portion. On top of that pattern, you will find applied hour markers with white Super-LumiNova.
A detailed ice-blue dial
The dial’s center is slightly recessed and features a sunburst pattern. It holds the three sub-dials and an additional set of hour markers. The 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock has a dark blue outer ring that matches the blue central chronograph hand and the hands in the three sub-dials.
Some nice details are the dark blue hour-marking squares at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock and the dark blue anodized insert on the crown. They match the color of the perforated leather strap perfectly, which is the second color used for the Talbot-Lago T26, this watch’s inspiration. The result is a stylish version of the Série-R Chronograph that is now my favorite in the line due to its presence and the story behind it.
If you turn the watch around, you will see the Chinese Peacock SL-4801 caliber powering it. This automatic chronograph movement debuted at the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair 2023 and is a great option for affordable chronographs. It operates at 28,800 vph and offers a 60-hour power reserve. The integrated chronograph architecture features a column wheel, a vertical clutch, and a transversal balance bridge.
Final thoughts on the new Depancel Série-R Chronograph Ice Blue Limited Edition
Overall, I was impressed by the Depancel Série-R Chronograph Ice Blue Limited Edition. The inspiration behind it plays a large part in that, of course. The T26 is a stunning reminder of the beautiful Talbot-Lago cars of the mid-20th century. The designs and the attention to detail are truly something special. Especially in an age when car designs have become interchangeable across brands, the T26 is a nice reminder of the brilliance of car design during that era.
It has led to a stripped-down, classy version of the Depancel Série-R Chronograph that also immediately stands out. I like the look of this Ice Blue Limited Edition better than the race-inspired versions we have seen. In fact, this one is my favorite in the series by a mile. Apparently, I am not the only one who loves this new limited edition. Unfortunately, all 100 pieces have already sold out at €1,495 each. I perfectly understand why, though, and I hope this inspires Depancel to create more versions of the Série-R Chronograph inspired by beautiful classic cars like the Talbot-Lago T26. For now, I have some reading to do on Talbot’s Lago era…
