Arkansas corn, rice harvest underway with strong early yields
Corn and rice harvest is underway in Arkansas, and other parts of the Delta.
In eastern Arkansas, Nathan Reed tells Brownfield farmers are pleased with corn yields.
“I think it’s the best corn crop I’ve ever had. First time in three years I’m positive going into harvest with a good crop and better prices,” he says.
Reed says he plans to start soybean harvest in the next few days, and in the next week, rice harvest will begin.
Jarrod Hardke with University of Arkansas Extension says the central and southern parts of Arkansas are reporting average rice yields, around 167 to 168 bushels per acre.
“Things are looking up, but still waiting to get a little bit deeper into harvest to see where some more of this rice ran into some of that July heat,” says Hardke. “And it looked like we escaped most of the harmful portions of it like that. It didn’t get us in the worst possible time and we kind of outran it.”
The USDA says rice harvest in Arkansas is 16 percent complete, nearly double the pace it was the previous week. No corn harvest has been reported nationally yet.
Across the Delta, soybeans are dropping their leaves, with USDA showing 36 percent in Arkansas, 27 percent in Tennessee and 12 percent in Kentucky.
Also, 36 percent of cotton bolls are open in Tennessee and 27 percent of cotton bolls are opened in Arkansas.
