The Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen hopes for more stability after the announced breakthrough in the conflict over Greenland. The long-lasting uncertainty will hopefully end soon with a binding agreement, Rasmussen reported. "Next week could be a good week (...) for Greenland, Denmark, and the USA."
According to Rasmussen, the agreement is to improve security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic and thus also the joint security in NATO and Europe. However, this should happen while respecting Denmark's "red lines."
It is an agreement that "strengthens our joint security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic and is therefore also good for NATO and Europe," said Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. She announced that the agreement will be signed at the UN General Assembly next Tuesday.
Signing next week
The USA, Denmark, and Greenland had previously surprisingly announced an agreement regarding the world's largest island. The governments of Denmark and Greenland reported that an agreement with the United States is expected to be signed next week.
US President Donald Trump, however, stated that the agreement has already been decided. According to the Republican, the USA secure far-reaching powers and control over the Arctic island with the agreement, which is largely autonomous but belongs to Danish territory. The Danish and Greenlandic sides did not confirm Trump's statements.
Trump had repeatedly demanded the annexation of Greenland by the USA and did not exclude the use of force. After a compromise mediated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the US President initially withdrew his demand.
