Yle followed the ICE's "dark" flights

A flight originating from Minneapolis involved the movement of individuals who were subsequently arrested by ICE. The flight operated on a regular Tuesday and included other private planes. Some individuals boarding the plane were shackled, which one observer noted made movement difficult. An airplane bomber named Nick Benson followed these flights, observing how hands and feet were shackled. Over the course of a year, 148 flights from Minneapolis carried nearly 5000 people arrested by ICE. The reporting details subsequent events involving an ICE flight moving through Texas and Nebraska before landing in Minneapolis. The situation is contextualized by prior public anger towards ICE following a shooting in Minneapolis in January 2026, and reports of ICE preventing detainees from accessing legal counsel. Volunteers, including Nick Benson, used personal cameras to record these movements, which were published online and provided information to arrested relatives.

The narrative presents a juxtaposition between official statements regarding immigration enforcement and the lived experience of individuals detained, highlighting systemic inconsistencies concerning legal process and accountability. The pattern observed involves an institutional effort to obscure movement and control information, as evidenced by the focus on "dark" charter flights and the use of physical restraints during transfers. Benson’s role as an observer reveals a crucial gap in official transparency; the fact that relatives often lack information about loved ones due to the lack of public deportation decisions suggests a power imbalance where information flow is deliberately restricted. Furthermore, the sequence of events—from mass arrests followed by volatile incidents, and the use of public memory sites for remembrance—demonstrates how collective action attempts to counter official narrative control. The contrast between the administration's stated goal (deportation) and the reality observed (arrests without criminal records) invites scrutiny regarding the application of authority. The pattern suggests that external observers must rely on decentralized, personal documentation to access truths obscured by institutional channels. Questions arise about the mechanisms used to justify detention transfers and how these operational realities align with stated legal procedures.
