Rogers’ early goal offered another reminder of why Chelsea were prepared to spend £117 million to beat Arsenal to his signature from Aston Villa during the close season.
Arsenal had refused to match Chelsea’s offer for the England midfielder, who became the most expensive British player in history following his move to Stamford Bridge.
His 77-second strike was an impressive start to his first major test against Arsenal, but it ultimately counted for little as the champions turned the game around.
Arteta gets better of Alonso
The match also renewed the rivalry between Arteta and Alonso, who have known each other since childhood in the Basque region of Spain.
Their teams produced a far more intense contest than the friendly matches they played as youngsters on the gravel pitches of San Sebastian.
