The Brazil TecLab modder team conducted an experiment: they converted an Nvidia graphics card by replacing the two 16-pin power connectors with three standard 8-pin PCIe connectors. With this, they were able to show the world the world's first RTX 5090 graphics card, which uses 8-pin power connectors instead of the 16-pin configuration.
The modification was made because although the RTX 5090 is undoubtedly a great card, its 16-pin power connector can melt under heavy load. The problem is that a huge amount of current flows through a very small contact and cable system. The three 8-pin connectors, however, divide the current through multiple physical paths, so not a single small connection point is overloaded.
During the experiment, the team took the Galax GeForce RTX 5090D HOF OC LAB XOC to the extreme, removed both native 16-pin inputs, and soldered three 8-pin connectors directly to the power regulators. They wired the Sense pins so that the card still requested full power, and the liquid cooling kept the temperature in check - writes TechPowerUp.
During a live broadcast, the modders increased the card's power from 400 W to 900 W through the three cables, drawing over 120 A while maintaining a clock speed of 3.4 GHz. They experimented with two 8-pin connectors, which still provided 66 A at 3.2 GHz, and even a single 8-pin connector delivered 65 A at 3.1 GHz. The modification was entirely hardware-based, without BIOS or software modifications. During the test, the modified RTX 5090 remained within power and temperature limits, and passed all tests excellently. In short, TecLab successfully demonstrated that older 8-pin connectors still offer a viable alternative for Nvidia's fastest graphics cards.
So, should you modify your RTX 5090 at home now? Well, there's no such thing. The fact is that TecLab showed that power distributed across multiple, standard connectors can handle very large currents while keeping the temperature low, but the team did not have to solve all the requirements that a mass-produced, guaranteed, standard product must meet.
