US President Donald Trump has alleviated fears about AI after OpenAI, Anthropic, and some security researchers are investigating tens of thousands of incidents related to problematic behaviors of frontier AI models. "It is a huge sector. We are ahead of China and we are building structures worth thousands of billions of dollars. Why should we give up? If something is wrong, they must fix it," the tycoon said on Fox News.
Trump also reiterated his belief that new regulations to limit the development of AI, or 'superintelligence' in his definition, would risk allowing China to surpass the United States. While acknowledging the concerns of Dario Amodei, Anthropic's number one whom Trump received at dinner at the White House, the tycoon said that everything "is really like the Industrial Revolution, or could even surpass the Industrial Revolution. Who would have thought? And it is, in fact, bigger than the Internet."
Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates is not equally at ease and urged the United States to take a leading role in regulating AI growth, warning, however, that reaching an international agreement on a global regulatory framework could prove "more difficult" than the negotiations of the Cold War for nuclear arms limitation. Speaking on 'Meet the Press' on NBC, Gates said that "no one thinks self-regulation is enough. Therefore, a law must be passed in Washington."
"AI is certainly powerful enough to trigger events that cause a billion deaths," Gates said in an early interview with NBC in recent days. "- Therefore, even if it is quite difficult to reach absolute certainty, there has never been a weapon more powerful than the combination of malicious individuals using the latest AI tools."
Gates criticized the Trump administration's approach, which considers AI exclusively from the perspective of global competition with China, neglecting its existential risks to security.
