One of the original Gladiators from the hit TV show of the 90s is set to make an appearance in Wexford, as part of a brand-new festival for fans of movies, comics, gaming, cosplay and all things retro.
Retro Con will make its debut at Whites of Wexford on Saturday and Sunday, August 29 and 30 and promises to be “the South East’s biggest celebration of retro and pop culture, with an exciting mix of celebrity guests, exhibitors, artists, traders, cosplay, gaming, movie memorabilia, interactive experiences, panel discussions and family-friendly entertainment”.
With the reboot of Gladiators having proved a hit in recent times, those of a certain vintage will vividly recall the original show which captivated audiences in the 90s and 00s. Central to that early success was Diane Youdale, best known to millions as Jet.
Diane became one of the show’s biggest stars in those early years and only left in 1996 after suffering a serious neck injury. In recent times, she has become one of the most popular guests on the UK convention circuit, where audiences regularly queue to meet one of the stars who helped to make Gladiators one of the biggest shows of the ‘90s.
Retro Con will make Diane’s first appearance at a convention in Ireland.
“Retro Con is about bringing people together through the films, television shows, games and characters that have inspired generations,” said the organising team.
“Whether you’re a lifelong collector, a passionate cosplayer, a gamer, or simply looking for a fantastic family day out, Retro Con has something for everyone. We couldn’t think of a better way to begin our guest announcements than with Diane Youdale, whose energy and enthusiasm have made her a fan favourite for decades.”
In the coming weeks, organisers will reveal additional celebrity guests, special attractions and exclusive experiences. The line-up will feature “a mix of stars making their first-ever convention appearances in Ireland alongside returning favourites from across the worlds of film, television and science fiction”.
Those behind the event are hopeful that it will attract thousands of visitors and will become “one of Wexford’s largest pop culture events and a major addition to the South East’s annual events calendar”.
