Bringing together leading academic institutions, multinational pharmaceutical companies, cutting-edge startups, and strong investment, the region has created an environment that consistently translates scientific research into commercial innovation. As Munich continues to strengthen its position on the European biotech map, we take a closer look at the factors driving the region’s success, the companies shaping its future, and what lies ahead for one of Europe’s fastest-growing life sciences ecosystems. Table of contentsMunich: One of Europe’s leading biotech and life sciences ecosystems Officially known as the European Metropolitan Region of Munich (EMM), the Munich area is home to 463 biopharma companies, employing around 48,700 people, with 68 clinical-stage drug candidates currently under development. “Munich combines the stability of an established cluster with the dynamics of an emerging one,” explained Prof. Dr. Ralf Huss, managing director at BioM, the network organization for the biotechnology cluster in Munich and Bavaria for over 25 years on behalf of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. “The foundations were established during Germany’s BioRegio competition in the 1990s, when Martinsried started to emerge as one of Europe’s first biotechnology campuses. Over the following decades, the ecosystem expanded steadily through excellent academic research, the translation of innovation, successful company creation, and strong public investment.” This leads us to the present day, where Munich and its ecosystem now combine all the characteristics of a mature international life science cluster: globally competitive research institutions, experienced management teams, specialized investors, multinational pharmaceutical companies, and an expanding manufacturing base. At the same time, record company creation, record financing volumes, and continued investments in infrastructure demonstrate that the ecosystem still has significant growth potential. In fact, 2025 was a record-breaking year for the region, with 24 newly founded biotech companies and two new settlements, as well as a record total of €896 million ($1,022.06 million) in funds raised. “These figures demonstrate not only the strength of the underlying science and a scalable innovation base but also growing confidence from international investors and corporates,” said Huss. Indeed, substantial strategic and long-term investments are also continuing to strengthen the ecosystem. For example, Roche is investing around €600 million ($684.26 million) in expanding its Penzberg campus in the south of Munich to include a new diagnostic production site. The Max Planck Society is building a new life sciences campus in Martinsried, supported by up to €500 million ($570.2 million) from the Free State of Bavaria. And the new Fraunhofer ITMP institute, WACKER’s Biotechnology Center, the ICON cardiovascular research center, and the new Hauner Children’s Hospital further expand the region’s research, manufacturing, and clinical translation capacity. Huss told Labiotech that another important advantage for Munich’s ecosystem is Bavaria’s long-term commitment to innovation, whereby continuous public investment in research infrastructure like Quantum Valley, the Munich Center for Data Science, or the Pandemic Alliance Munich, combined with strong industry engagement, has created an environment where scientific discoveries can be translated rapidly into commercial success. Munich’s biotech hub is also strengthened by a high – and still growing – concentration of global giants. Companies like Roche, Daiichi Sankyo, Amgen, WACKER Biotech, Bristol Myers Squibb, GSK, WuXi AppTec, and MSD have chosen to operate in the region, whether that be for research and development (R&D) purposes, scalable manufacturing, or commercial operations. “Their presence creates an ideal environment where innovative startups, top-level academia and multinational companies collaborate closely – accelerating technology transfer, attracting and retaining international talent and reinforcing Munich’s position as one of Europe’s premier life science hubs,” said Huss. He added that Roche’s Penzberg campus alone ranks among Europe’s largest biotechnology centers and exemplifies the region’s unique combination of scientific excellence and industrial scale. Munich also happens to be home to many of the world’s major tech companies, including Siemens, Microsoft, Apple, OpenAI, Google, Telekom, and Nvidia. Their presence here further highlights Munich’s appeal as a global innovation hub, attracting companies across a wide range of high-tech industries. Inevitably, this sort of research environment has led to a brimming startup scene. “The German startup landscape is concentrated across a few interconnected metropolitan areas, with Munich and Bavaria leading deep-tech and research-driven ventures and establishing itself as one of Europe’s strongest environments and infrastructure for life science, biotechnology, medicine and techbio entrepreneurship,” explained Huss. “Numerous startup programs from universities, research institutions, and governmental organizations, including their incubator and accelerator activities, build the sound base to mature ideas into investable startups.” He added that Munich’s biotech hub also offers excellent infrastructure through specialized biotech incubators and innovation centers, such as BioM’s Munich Accelerator Life Sciences & Medicine (MAxL) in Martinsried and the Innovation and Start-up Center for Biotechnology (IZB) in Martinsried and Freising-Weihenstephan, which provide laboratory space, mentoring, and direct access to investors and industry partners. These initiatives are complemented by a broad range of entrepreneurship and technology transfer programs offered by the region’s research institutions. For example, LMU Munich and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) actively support founders through dedicated startup and innovation programs; Helmholtz Munich expanded the ecosystem with its Pioneer Campus and the Life Science Factory; and the newly opened BioLabs Munich provides additional laboratory space. As one might expect, this level of academic and scientific excellence – alongside the presence of experienced founders and serial entrepreneurs, international investors, and specialized support organizations – has translated into the creation of numerous successful homegrown biotech companies over the years. Today, a new generation of highly innovative companies is driving innovation across next-generation therapeutics and enabling technologies, including antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), cancer immunotherapy, radiopharmaceuticals, inhaled RNA therapeutics, computational modeling for drug development, and clinical trial design, as well as artificial intelligence (AI)-powered medical imaging. Huss pointed toward Tubulis, CatalYm, SciRhom, ITM Isotope Technologies Munich (ITM), RNhale, Ebenbuild, and deepc as being some of the most successful companies in the region. In fact, Tubulis, which was supported by BioM, was recently acquired by Gilead thanks to the promise of its ADC platform and its lead candidate, TUB-040, a NaPi2b-targeting drug for ovarian cancer and other solid tumors. “We are very proud of Tubulis as the latest example of a Munich-based startup with global reach and success, and that we were able to support this company on its path to success,” said Huss. “After receiving the Bavarian m4 Award in 2017 – a pre-seed competition funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and coordinated by BioM – the company developed into one of Europe’s leading ADC pioneers.” Overall, Huss said that Munich benefits from a highly diversified innovation portfolio, making the ecosystem – and the companies in it – particularly resilient to financial gaps and therefore attractive for investors. Can Munich’s biotech hub grow even further in the coming years? “We are very confident that the Munich biotech hub will continue to strengthen its position as one of Europe’s leading life science innovation and translation clusters,” stressed Huss. He continued to explain that the region’s future bodes well as it is particularly well positioned in rapidly growing fields including AI-supported drug discovery and protein design, precision medicine, nucleic acids therapeutics, radiopharmaceuticals and advanced biologics, as well as cell and gene therapy. Meanwhile, continued investments in computing and research infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities will further enhance Munich’s international competitiveness. “To unlock its full potential, Germany and Bavaria should continue improving access to growth capital, accelerate technology transfer, simplify regulatory processes, and strengthen incentives for international talent and R&D savvy biopharmaceutical companies. It is important to establish early a good and trustful relationship between the scientists at the universities and academic institutions and the market-knowledgeable global partner.” Huss also added that, beyond its scientific and industrial strengths, the Munich Metropolitan Region is an exceptionally attractive place to live and work, consistently ranking among Europe’s most livable locations, as it offers an outstanding quality of life, excellent schools and universities, a vibrant international community, and easy access to the Alps and surrounding lakes.
