The United States and Denmark have reached an agreement regarding the dispute over Greenland, and the United States President Donald Trump announced it on his social media Truth Social on Saturday evening Suomi time.
Denmark and Greenland have also confirmed the agreement has been reached.
According to Trump, the agreement grants the United States permanent control over the territory. The United States intends to reinforce its military presence on the island immediately. Trump writes that the agreement satisfies all of the United States' security concerns.
"From now on, no enemy of the United States shall ever be allowed to station its headquarters in Greenland, maintain a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments there without our written permission," Trump writes.
The agreement is allegedly valid "forever" according to Trump.
Reuters reports to its sources that the agreement would give the United States military rights to a broader presence on the island. However, the agreement would not be as far as the United States President Trump's plans to take full control of Greenland.
Denmark and the United States have discussed the possibility of using the Golden Dome air defense system in the Greenland area. According to one Reuters source, the countries are also discussing ways to limit China's presence and influence in the area.
The agreement is planned to be signed next week in connection with the United Nations General Assembly, according to a press release from the Danish Prime Minister.
"I am pleased that we have a good agreement in sight for Greenland, Denmark, and the United States. The agreement strengthens our security in the Arctic, and is therefore also useful to NATO and Europe," says the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in the statement.
The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, in turn states that the new agreement recognizes Greenland's interests and the island's position in the international community.
Trump has desired control over Greenland for a long time. He proposed buying the island even in his first presidential term.
Trump's rhetoric intensified after his re-election. He demanded that the United States get Greenland for itself because otherwise Russia or China would occupy it.
Trump's earlier aspirations have raised concerns about NATO unity and respect for international law in the area.
