Wiki for Minorities continues to grow across Sub-Saharan Africa, and Burkina Faso has now become an important part of this expanding movement for diversity, inclusion, and representation in the Wikimedia ecosystem. In recent years, the Wiki for Minorities Burkina Faso initiative brought together Wikimedia contributors to address the digital underrepresentation of minority and marginalized communities across the country. The initiative was designed to document, preserve, and make more visible the histories, cultures, languages, experiences, and contributions of communities that remain poorly represented online.
The campaign placed particular emphasis on people with albinism, people who are blind or visually impaired, people with disabilities, minority linguistic and cultural communities, and other groups whose stories are often missing from online knowledge resources.
From Learning to Contributing
The Burkina Faso campaign was not only about raising awareness, it was designed to equip participants with practical Wikimedia skills and turn them into active contributors to free knowledge. The program began with an introductory Wikimedia workshop on 8 August 2026, where participants were introduced to Wiki for Minorities and learned how to contribute to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. Participants also created Wikimedia accounts and identified articles and topics requiring documentation and improvement. This was followed by contribution sessions on 15 and 22 August, where participants created and improved Wikipedia articles, enriched Wikidata items, uploaded photographs and other media to Wikimedia Commons, and received hands-on support from experienced contributors. These activities helped transform the campaign’s central idea making minority communities visible in free knowledge into practical contributions across Wikimedia projects.
Giving Communities the Opportunity to tell their own Stories
One of the most important aspects of the Burkina Faso initiative was its emphasis on community led documentation. Rather than allowing minority communities to remain subjects that are rarely documented, the project sought to provide people with the skills and platforms to participate directly in documenting their own histories, identities, cultures, and contributions. This approach reflects the broader vision of Wiki for Minorities: “Let’s Tell Our Own Stories.” The initiative was also part of the wider Minority in Africa Campaign, which brought together Wikimedia communities from several African countries to address knowledge gaps surrounding minority communities.
Celebrating the Results
The campaign concluded with a restitution and closing ceremony on 5 September 2026, providing an opportunity for participants to present the results of their work, share experiences, receive certificates and recognize outstanding contributors. With 21 participants recorded for the campaign, Burkina Faso has demonstrated how a focused community initiative can bring new contributors into the Wikimedia movement while simultaneously addressing important gaps in the representation of minority communities.
A new chapter for Wiki for Minorities in Africa
The Burkina Faso experience represents more than the completion of a single campaign. It marks another step in building a stronger African network of Wikimedia contributors committed to diversity, accessibility, inclusion, and the preservation of local knowledge. As Wiki for Minorities continues to expand across the continent, Burkina Faso’s contribution demonstrates what is possible when local Wikimedia communities take ownership of documenting the people and cultures that make their societies diverse.
