Hong Kong has moved forward with plans to extend the overrun tunnels east of Hong Kong Station, with amendments to the railway scheme gazetted ahead of construction of around 500m of new underground infrastructure.

The amendments cover the General Layout Plan, Creation of Rights of Temporary Occupation of Land Plan, and Control of Building Plans and Commencement of Work Plan.
The Government said the latest design has also sought to optimise construction methods and minimise the project’s impact on the Central Harbourfront.
The extended overrun tunnels are intended to improve operational capacity at Hong Kong Station and support increased demand generated by development on Lantau Island, including the Tung Chung New Town Extension.
The works form part of wider improvements associated with the Tung Chung Line Extension (TUE), which is extending the existing railway approximately 1.3km from Tung Chung Station to a new Tung Chung West Station.
The TUE also includes construction of the new intermediate Tung Chung East Station. Its delivery requires modifications to approximately 1.2km of the existing railway between Sunny Bay and Tung Chung stations.
Construction of the two new stations and associated railway sections began in May 2023 and is scheduled for completion in 2029.
The Hong Kong Station overrun tunnel element will follow separately. Construction is expected to begin once the amended railway scheme has been authorised, with the main works scheduled for completion by 2032.
The Government said the additional infrastructure would enhance train operating efficiency and increase the capacity of the railway network to accommodate future transport demand from Tung Chung and other developments across Lantau.
Members of the public have until October 20, 2026, to submit objections to the amendments under Hong Kong’s Railways Ordinance.
