Catalan composer and experimental musician Marina Herlop is readying a new album, Dja Dja. Herlop will self-release her follow-up to 2023’s Nekkuja on October 9. Below, listen to a new song from the record, “Jaque.”
According to press materials, Dja Dja was inspired by the “the hero’s journey,” the narrative framework popularized by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero With a Thousand Faces. Herlop recorded most of the album—which she described as “like a giant sudoku”—at her home, and later traveled to Bali to record local musicians playing gamelan.
