Kjell Nilsson, famously known for playing Lord Humungus in Mad Max: The Road Warrior, died on Thursday, July 2, at 76 years old.
His family posted the news on his Facebook, saying he “passed peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his sons.” He’d previously spent over four years battling end-stage kidney disease. The eulogy by his family notes that he’d proven doctors wrong by living long enough to have “four more Christmases [and] four precious extra years with the people who loved him most” after his diagnosis in 2022.
Born December 19, 1949, Nilsson was a Swedish Olympic-class weightlifter. After moving to Australia in 1980 to train Swedish athletes, he met actor Kate Ferguson, who he later married. With her encouragement, he worked in Australia’s film industry, where he made his film debut as the aforementioned Humungus. Road Warrior released to critical acclaim—like Fury Road, it’s been cited as one of the best action films ever—and in turn allowed Nilsson to “inspire and connect with people around the world through his iconic role.” Outside of Mad Max, his other acting credits include 1982’s The Pirate Movie, 1987’s The Edge of Power, and more recently Howlin’ Refrain in 2023.
“Kjell lived a colourful life on his own terms, with unwavering conviction, an adventurous heart, and a spirit that refused to surrender,” his family wrote. “To all of his friends, fans, clients, and family: thank you. You made his life richer and fuller than you could ever know.”
