Party-rock-icon-turned-TBN-halftime-show artist Kid Rock marked the 28th anniversary of Devil Without a Cause this week with a video, and somewhere in the middle of it he announced that his next album is a faith record.
“It’s a crazy journey I’ve been on, this spiritual journey,” he said. “But I’ve grown a lot stronger in my faith.” The album is mastered next week and out this fall, with another behind it. He called it “an album I had to record, I was called to record.”
He also wanted to manage expectations. “Don’t worry,” he said. “I’m still Kid Motherf***ing Rock.”

He’s been circling the idea for a while. In March of last year, on Real Time with Bill Maher, he said he was “in the early beginnings now, doing a Gospel record with my old friend Rick Rubin,” who produced his 2010 album Born Free. He hasn’t said whether the record arriving this fall is that record.
Maher pressed him on it at the time. Asked how a gospel album squares with a song like “Lowlife” — which includes the line “I got kids I’ve never seen, and their mama’s 17” — Kid Rock said he might sing it in church. Then he explained himself: “I know the Ten Commandments pretty well. And in those commandments, I’ve never once seen or even heard a thought of one being, ‘Thou shalt not swear.'”
He says his pastor is Paula White. He sang “Give Your Life to Jesus” at a Turning Point USA Super Bowl halftime show that aired on TBN earlier this year. He’s been co-mingling faith, conservative politics and his party rock reputation for a few years now. This fall, it’ll finally have a soundtrack.
