TAWAU (July 9): Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) continues to play a vital role in producing a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting industry demands and contributing to the nation’s economic development, said Datuk James Ratib.
The Sabah Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister said that amid rapid advancements in technology, automation and digitalisation, TVET has emerged as a key driver in developing a highly skilled, innovative and competitive workforce.
James said vocational colleges in Sabah and Labuan continue to be significant contributors to the country’s skilled workforce development, resulting in growing interest in TVET among parents and students.
“The expanding career opportunities in technical and vocational fields have encouraged more students to pursue skills-based education as their preferred pathway for further studies and employment,” he said in a speech at the closing ceremony of the KV Skills Competition for the Sabah Zone and Federal Territory of Labuan 2026 at Kolej Vokasional Tawau on Wednesday.
His speech was delivered by his Political Secretary Justinus Jalang.
James noted that the KV Skills Competition was more than just a competition to determine winners, describing it as an important platform for students to test their competencies, build self-confidence, cultivate professional work practices and foster teamwork and sportsmanship.
According to him, the competition also provides participants with the opportunity to benchmark their abilities against real industry standards, preparing them for future careers.
James expressed pride over the strong participation from vocational colleges across Sabah and Labuan, saying it reflected the high level of technical skills, creativity, innovation and determination among TVET students.
He encouraged participants to view the competition as a valuable learning experience, stressing that the knowledge gained, professional networks built and positive values acquired were more meaningful than winning alone.
The minister also conveyed his appreciation to lecturers, trainers and parents for their continued support in guiding students and helping them realise their potential.
He expressed hope that the KV Skills Competition would continue to serve as a platform for producing competent and ethical TVET graduates who are ready to meet current and future industry needs.
“The government remains committed to strengthening the TVET agenda as one of the key pillars of human capital development and economic growth,” he added.
The KV Skills Competition for the Sabah Zone and Federal Territory of Labuan 2026 brought together students from vocational colleges throughout Sabah and Labuan to showcase their skills, creativity and competencies across various fields based on industry standards.
