2026 has been a big year for Game of Thrones fans, who have been treated to not one but two official releases from the beloved fantasy franchise. Widely hailed as creator George R.R. Martin’s favorite Game of Thrones project, the first new release of the year came all the way back in January with the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Consisting of only six thirty-minute episodes, the show felt like classic Game of Thrones scaled down to a much more intimate tale, which worked well enough to score a Season 2 renewal and confirmed 2027 return. Following in August was the highly anticipated premiere of the third season of House of the Dragon, which has been firing on all cylinders throughout its current run.

Is HBO Making a ‘Game of Thrones’ Movie?
The new strategy game, which has unfortunately been delayed until 2027, will allow fans to step into the boots of Jon Snow and take on The Night King, the same confrontation that the first seven seasons of Game of Thrones set up before giving Arya Stark the killing blow in the final season. Fans will have the choice in Game of Thrones: War for Westeros to control whichever great House or army they like, turning the tide of wars and battles in whichever direction they see fit. The game will launch on PC only when it arrives next year.
It was discussed earlier this year at CinemaCon that HBO and Warner Bros are working together to develop a Game of Thrones feature film. The movie, which is reportedly planned for a theatrical release, will center around Aegon’s conquest of Westeros, meaning it will feature the great dragon, Balerion the Black Dread. However, fans shouldn't hold their breath just yet. HBO Chairman and CEO CaseyBloys recently confirmed that there are currently no additional Game of Thrones spin-offs in development beyond House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Bloys noted that audiences often mistake early exploratory development for officially greenlit projects. The film may still be in the earliest conceptual stages, so assuming it does overcome the various development hurdles in its path without being shelved, it likely won’t be released until closer to 2030, possibly even later.
