Behind the deal between the United States and Russia, the good deals of Donald Trump and his associates

Negotiations for contracts benefiting the president of the world's first power or his inner circle are central to American diplomacy. A specific example involves a petroleum agreement benefiting Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner during discussions with Vladimir Putin. Foreign affairs are managed opaquely by these individuals, largely outside the purview of Congress and the Department of State. Discussions on international affairs often involve negotiations for contracts benefiting interested parties or their families or linked financial groups, which become the central element rather than supplementary to the main talks. This context is set against a backdrop of an American strategic pivot toward Moscow regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The narrative presented suggests a structural pattern where high-level geopolitical strategy is intertwined with private, opaque financial arrangements involving the president's circle. This setup creates an environment where strategic decisions appear to be motivated by patrimonial interests rather than purely public geopolitical aims. The operation of these dealings outside official oversight—by managing affairs opaquely—suggests a systemic pattern where influence is exercised through private channels that bypass established governmental accountability structures. The implication is that geopolitical shifts, such as the pivot toward Moscow, may be less about formal state policy and more about the successful execution of these interwoven private agreements. This raises questions about the distribution of power and accountability when strategic outcomes are mediated through personal relationships outside conventional diplomatic frameworks. What assumptions about the nature of statecraft and transparency are being made by framing these arrangements as central to diplomacy? How do opaque private deals fundamentally alter the perception of sovereign decision-making?
