There are lots of reasons to rejoice at the arrival of spring. Spending time outdoors becomes pleasant rather than a test of endurance, trees and flowers in bloom bring colour back to the world after a cold, dark winter, and a boost in vitamin D from the sun quite literally improves your mood. But as nice as all that stuff is, there’s one thing that excites us about the transitional months perhaps more than anything else: lightweight outerwear.
After months of hiding carefully curated outfits underneath the same massive coat every day, it’s time for outerwear to become part of the full picture once more. This is where layering becomes fun again, rather than a matter of pure necessity. Fabric options increase, insulation is a choice rather than a prerequisite and silhouettes become slimmer, allowing you to stack pieces with gay abandon.
With that in mind, these are lightweight jackets we believe every man should consider for spring 2026.
Waxed Jacket
Waxed jackets might be trending at the moment, but they’ve always been there, quietly getting their job done and smelling a bit musty while doing it. That’s all part of the appeal, though.
This is one of the few pieces of clothing – along with things like raw denim and a good pair of boots – that gets better the more you live in it. The fabric develops a patina, each scuff and scrape tells a story, and every rewax brings out its character that little bit more.
But it’s not all aesthetics. The waxed-cotton outer can shrug off showers with ease, while the unlined design makes it highly adaptable for the fluctuating temperatures of spring. It’s a piece to run into the ground, repair and run into the ground again. Rinse and repeat ad infinitum.
Statement Overshirt
The plain twill overshirt is undoubtedly a classic, but its ubiquity has turned it into something of a menswear meme. It’s the easy option. The default. Something men who can’t dress themselves put on to avoid having to think about their outfits. That’s fine, but sometimes it’s good to cut through the grey, and a statement version is the perfect way to do so.
Wax London has a knack for getting this right. Think classic shapes, such as three-pocket worker jackets and simple zip-through blousons, but with wild all-over patterns and big bold colours… always just the right amount of tasteful though.
Remember, if you’re going down the statement route, make sure to keep the rest of your outfit relatively understated.
Denim Chore Jacket
The ultimate workwear fabric meets the ultimate workwear garment. Denim and chore jackets are a match made in blue-collar heaven, and it works perfectly in the transitional months.
Somewhere between a classic denim jacket and a heavyweight overshirt, this hardy piece of light outerwear is surprisingly versatile.

Wool Bomber
The bomber jacket is a classic outerwear silhouette, but we always prefer the look and feel of natural fabrics wherever possible. Swapping the shiny nylon for natural wool takes things in a slightly more elevated direction and transforms the garment into something that feels more considered and deliberate.
Warm? Sure, but the cropped shape offsets this, keeping things spring-appropriate.
Zip-Through Blouson
With its slightly cropped shape, clean, uncluttered design and roomy cut, a simple zip-through blouson is both bang-on-trend and timelessly stylish. It fills a similar gap in your wardrobe to an overshirt, but it feels sleeker and a bit more in-the-know.
If you want to maximise versatility, we’d suggest sticking to neutral block colours, but this piece also works well as a statement. If the latter appeals, keep it simple with two- or three-tone geometric prints or stripes and make sure it’s not fighting other elements of your outfit for centre stage.
Sporty Windbreaker
For something sportier, a simple windbreaker in a bold colour scheme or semi-opaque fabric is a good option. It ties into the wider trend of running gear making its way into casual wardrobes, and there are some excellent options from some really cool under-the-radar brands.

Technical Shell
Torrential downpours can and do occur during the springtime, and when they happen, you need something that can protect you. Like, actually protect you. Waxed jackets and windbreakers are all well and good, but when it comes to serious rain, only a proper waterproof shell will do the trick.
The good news is that it’s not just performance-focused outdoor brands making this type of outerwear anymore. Menswear’s ongoing obsession with functional outdoor clothing has driven some more fashion-forward labels to produce more visually interesting options that still incorporate the same technical materials.

Olive Field Jacket
Military gear has long been a source of inspiration for menswear, and few pieces have made the jump quite as seamlessly as the field jacket. The olive M-65 is the one most people picture, and for good reason. Four pockets, a bit of structure, just enough room to layer underneath. It’s practical, it looks the part, and it carries a certain quiet authority without trying too hard.
