OpenAI told investors that its revenue grew by 18% in the second quarter, compared to the first, while its losses deepened. The company’s second quarter revenue reached $6.7 billion, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
OpenAI did not immediately reply to PYMNTS’ request for comment.
According to the WSJ report, Anthropic more than doubled its revenue over the same period and made a small operating profit. The company’s second quarter revenue reached $11.6 billion.
The report attributed the second quarter results to OpenAI’s ChatGPT seeing a slowdown in growth, while Anthropic’s Claude Code coding tool saw continued success.
OpenAI told investors that its growth rate has accelerated during the current quarter, following the launch of new AI models in July, according to the report.
Bloomberg reported Friday (Aug. 14) that Anthropic shared with would-be investors that its preliminary revenue figure for the second quarter was more than $11.5 billion and that it earned positive adjusted operating income.
Anthropic’s second quarter revenue marked a greater than 14-fold increase compared to the $787 million it earned during the same quarter in 2025.
Bloomberg noted that Anthropic’s growth is happening as the company is competing with OpenAI for enterprise customers. Anthropic had been an underdog in the race between the two companies, but has since enjoyed a wave of corporate adoption of its products for uses like coding.
PYMNTS reported in June 2025 that AI coding assistants enable smaller teams to do tasks that would cost a lot more and require additional engineers, and they cut development time for businesses to bring products to market faster.
On Aug. 5, PYMNTS reported that several companies, including OpenAI, Meta and Google, have been working to expand and enhance their offerings in AI coding. On Wednesday (Aug. 12), it was reported that DeepSeek is also targeting the agentic coding market.
Both Anthropic and OpenAI have filed confidential paperwork to go public, and Anthropic is expected to reach the market as soon as this fall, Bloomberg reported Thursday (Aug. 13).

Executive Summary
The competitive landscape for enterprise AI is shifting as Anthropic demonstrates rapid financial acceleration compared to OpenAI. In the second quarter, Anthropic achieved $11.6 billion in revenue and a small operating profit, marking a massive increase over its 2025 performance. In contrast, OpenAI reported $6.7 billion in revenue—an 18% increase over the previous quarter—while experiencing deepening financial losses.
This divergence is linked to product adoption, specifically the success of Anthropic’s Claude Code tool versus a growth slowdown for ChatGPT. However, OpenAI indicates that growth has accelerated in the current quarter following July's release of new models. Both companies are now positioning for public markets, with Anthropic potentially debuting this fall. The broader market remains highly contested, with Google, Meta, and DeepSeek also expanding into the agentic coding sector to capture corporate customers.
Full Take
The strongest version of this narrative is that the AI market is transitioning from a "first-mover advantage" phase to a "specialized utility" phase, where targeted tools like coding assistants drive more sustainable revenue than general-purpose chatbots.
The narrative relies heavily on the Authority Game, as the central financial claims—including billion-dollar revenue figures and profit margins—rest entirely on "people familiar with the matter" and "would-be investors" rather than audited financial statements. This creates a signal environment where perception of momentum is treated as equivalent to verified fiscal health.
The underlying paradigm is the "Growth at All Costs" venture capital model, now colliding with the reality of astronomical compute expenses. The contrast between OpenAI's deepening losses and Anthropic's marginal profit suggests a pivotal question: is the current AI trajectory a scalable business or a subsidized arms race? The shift toward "agentic coding" indicates that the industry is moving away from conversational interfaces toward autonomous productivity, which shifts the value proposition from "information retrieval" to "labor replacement."
The second-order consequence is the potential consolidation of corporate intellectual property within a few proprietary ecosystems. If coding—the foundational language of modern infrastructure—becomes dependent on a few private models, human agency in software architecture may diminish.

Counterstrike Scan: A coordinated influence campaign would leak selective, unverified financial "wins" for a specific company to drive up IPO valuation or trigger a talent exodus from a competitor. The current content aligns with standard financial journalism reporting on leaks, rather than a coordinated attack.
Bridge Questions:
1. How would the competitive landscape change if these companies were required to release audited financials before going public?
2. Does the success of "coding tools" suggest that AI's primary value is in narrow, high-value technical tasks rather than general intelligence?
3. Who benefits most from the narrative that the "underdog" is suddenly overtaking the leader?
