When people think of the archaeology of Israel, the Silk Road is not usually the first association that comes to mind. Similarly, Nahal Omer, a small early Islamic site located in the Arava Valley — a desert region stretching from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba — often goes unrecognized. We hope to change this perception through our new virtual exhibition, From Trash to Treasure: Nahal Omer. The exhibition highlights how the remains of everyday life in a remote desert settlement can illuminate long-distance trade and cultural connections across the medieval world.
The inspiration for this exhibition emerged quite literally from the trash middens — collections of discarded materials found on the outskirts of many archaeological sites. While excavating the Early Islamic site of Nahal Omer in the Arava Valley, we encountered something unexpected: not monumental architecture, but dense accumulations of organic waste preserved by the desert’s dry climate. What began as a routine investigation of refuse deposits quickly became a window into a vibrant and interconnected world.
Nahal Omer is situated at a crossroads connecting Arabia with the Negev and the desert with the Mediterranean. It was a modest village and way station between the 7th and 9th centuries CE, located along routes linking the Incense Road to the Silk Road. The trash mounds we excavated, first discovered by chance, proved to be extraordinary “social archives,” preserving textiles, plant remains, basketry, leather, and even fragments of written documents.
Our renewed excavations, conducted using high-resolution recovery techniques, revealed thousands of textile fragments alongside everyday items such as date seeds, cordage, and wooden objects. What struck us most was the richness and diversity of the textile assemblage: cotton, linen, wool, goat hair, Bactrian camel hair — and, most remarkably, silk. Many of these textiles originated far beyond the Negev, with some likely produced in Central Asia, India, or even China. In a remote desert village, we were suddenly confronted with tangible evidence of long-distance trade and cultural exchange.
This realization became the intellectual core of our research project, Revealing the Israeli Silk Road. By focusing on a small and often overlooked settlement, we were able to trace the threads of broader connectivity networks that linked distant regions through the movement of goods, people, and technologies. The textiles of Nahal Omer are not merely remnants of garments; they are carriers of information about trade routes, technological knowledge, and social identities. Through them, we can see how a desert community actively participated in wider economic and cultural systems that spanned far beyond its immediate environment.
We had the opportunity to turn our research into a virtual exhibition through our collaboration with the Silk Road Virtual Museum, led by Professor Richard Griffiths. This collaboration challenged us to rethink how we communicate archaeology. Instead of presenting our findings solely through academic publications, we were encouraged to tell a compelling story — one that would engage a broad audience and highlight the importance of our discoveries beyond academia.
Designing the exhibition within the Virtual Silk Museum platform was both stimulating and challenging. We were particularly drawn to the platform because it places local discoveries within the broader landscape of the Silk Roads and allows visitors to navigate exhibitions with ease through an intuitive, visually engaging interface. The integration of photographs, maps, and excavation videos helped us to distill complex scientific data in an accessible and engaging way while remaining faithful to the archaeological evidence.
The exhibition panels, which covered the site’s context, excavation process, textile collection, laboratory research, and broader connections, allowed us to structure the story both visually and thematically. We aimed to guide visitors from the refuse of a small village to the vast networks of the Silk Roads. Visitors can explore the exhibition as a connected narrative, featuring excavation photos, reconstructed trade routes, textile imagery, and short videos that highlight the discoveries and their historical context.
One of the most powerful ideas that emerged during this process is captured in a simple phrase: today’s garbage is tomorrow’s treasure. The trash mounds of Nahal Omer illustrate how discarded materials can provide invaluable insights into daily life, the economy, and social connections. Unlike elite objects preserved in palaces or temples, these humble remains reflect the lived experiences of ordinary people—the clothes they wore, the food they consumed, and the goods they traded.
Presenting our research in a virtual format adds another layer of value. Digital exhibitions break down geographical barriers, making archaeological knowledge accessible to audiences who may never can visit the site. They also allow for the integration of different types of data — images, maps, reconstructions, and narratives — creating a more immersive and comprehensive experience. In the case of Nahal Omer, this format is especially appropriate: just as the site connected distant regions in the past, the virtual exhibition connects diverse audiences in the present.
Moreover, the virtual medium encourages interdisciplinary storytelling. Our project combines bioarchaeology, textile studies, and historical analysis, and the exhibition reflects this synthesis. It demonstrates how scientific methods—such as fiber identification and dye analysis—can be woven together with historical interpretation to reconstruct ancient networks of exchange.
Ultimately, this collaboration has strengthened our belief that archaeology is not only about uncovering the past but also about sharing it. The story of Nahal Omer reminds us that even in the most remote and seemingly marginal places, we can discover evidence of global connections. By bringing this story to the public through the Virtual Silk Museum, we hope to highlight the enduring relevance of these connections and inspire new ways of thinking about the past, present, and future of human interactions.
