Hoop het jou gedra,
pa,
deur die jare,
die droogte,
deur plant en oes,
deur die bank se skuld,
debiet en krediet, gebalanseer,
en daardie laaste jaar,
onthou pa,
toe die reën soos heling
oor die aarde val,
daai lente was immergroen
in ons geheues vasgelê,
die oes wat vir die eerste
keer in jare ʼn wins vir ons
kon bring, skuld gedelg en
ʼn stukkie oor vir vyf heel
dae teen die see, min sou
ons weet, daardie kersfees
was so vêr as wat hoop
vir pa sou dra.
