By David SalazarApple Music Classical has launched its first time synchronized Listening Guide to Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen,” marking the 150th anniversary of the cycle’s premiere.
The guide accompanies listeners through the full 15-plus hours of the four-opera cycle with commentary synchronized in real time to Sir Georg Solti’s recording on Decca Classics. Created over the course of a year by a team of editors, writers, and Wagner specialists, the project comprises more than 45,000 words of commentary and is available in six languages. It is the largest of more than 200 Listening Guides now offered on the app, which was launched in March 2023 and offers a catalog of more than six million tracks.
Wagner’s “Ring” premiered in August 1876 at the composer’s Bayreuth Festival Theatre and has since influenced literature, film, television, theater, and video games.
Alongside the guide, Apple Music and Apple Music Classical have introduced four curated playlists built around themes including power and greed, love and humanity, nature and magic, and fate and foreboding, along with a dedicated “Ring” destination bringing together recordings, playlists, and editorial content. Additional content is planned in the coming month, including an artist curated commentary playlist featuring soprano Lise Davidsen, conductor Sir Antonio Pappano, and historians Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook.
“Apple Music Classical is dedicated to exposing the wonder of classical music to newcomers and experienced listeners alike,” said Anjali Malhotra, Global Director of Apple Music Classical, per an official press release. “For the 150th anniversary of Wagner’s Ring, our intention for the Listening Guide is to bring audiences closer to one of the most influential works ever composed.”
