Guidance for Indigenous Collections and Indigenous Data: Recommendations from Creative Commons and Local Contexts is a new resource for cultural institution staff and cultural heritage practitioners to protect Indigenous rights within belongings and data.
The Guidance was authored by Local Contexts’ Hop Hopkins, Jane Anderson, Maui Hudson (Whakatōhea), and Corrie Roe; and Vanessa Smith, JD/MBA Candidate at UCLA.
An approachable, practical resource, case studies within the Guidance exemplify how the Local Contexts Labels and Notices and Creative Commons licenses are complementary and can be used together to provide better protection and nuance to cultural belongings and data.
On 1 September, Creative Commons hosted a webinar with the authors of the Guidance and Anne Young, Director of Legal Affairs and Intellectual Property at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. The recording is available on Creative Commons’ YouTube.
